    This Thangka depicts a Red Bodhisattva or perfect God like figure who has gained enlightenment, but has chosen not to enter Nirvana ( the heaven like state that ends the eternal cycle of reincarnation) but chooses to stay and guide others to enlightenment. The Bodhisattva is sitting on a lotus flower which represents goodness and purity. It is an analagy of how people can raise themselves above everyday Life to reach enlightenment in the way a Lotus raises its flower above the mud of a pond.
